Challenge
Four Ages was responsible for the advancement of the cross-platform mobile application that connects low-vision and blind individuals with volunteers ready to help them. The main objective was to enhance the existing solution with AI assistance and adapt it for different mobile platforms and smart glasses.
Solution
There was already an app for iOS devices, but it was also essential to create the app for the Android platform. For that, the Expo Framework solution was used since it enables the building of apps across different platforms.
Another task was to complement the existing functionality of an app with AI features. For that, we relied on the Keras engine, which implements deep learning technology, and Python programming language. That way, the core of this application was programmed to analyze images and distinguish objects on them. As a result, the system can describe visual content to low-vision people with voice.
Impact
Nowadays, more than a half-million of blind and low-vision people are using this app. They can either opt to contact one of the millions of volunteers on a call or use the AI assistant to get a description of visual content. The platform can now handle surging traffic without performance bottlenecks for the best experience for millions of users worldwide.
